Summary

Postulating, that depression is more dependant upon personality and life style than specific chronic pain syndrome, the author in a study of a 200 heterogenous chronic pain outpatients population, looked at the following correlations:

  • - between depression and pain intensity as measured by the BDI and VAS respectively

  • - between the BDI and other variables that is, sociodemographic data, average duration and localisation of pain, and comportemental, affective and cognitive aspects noted in the attitudes of chronic pain patients, with regard to themselves and their entourage

  • - between the VAS and the above variables

If considered like an abnormal illness behaviour, chronic pain depends upon personality's factors and if depression is present it emphasizes this coping strategy and influences the pain intensity. The results seemed to confirm this hypothesis
