Summary and Conclusions
1. The presence of pepsin and rennin in the gastric juice cannot be demonstrated unless the pH of the sample is 7.0 or below; however, the height of the secretion of these enzymes does not necessarily depend upon the amount of acid secreted.
2. The importance of titrating to neutrality with phenol red as an indicator is pointed out.
3. It is suggested that the term “achylia gastrica,” in contrast to the term “anacidity,” be reserved for that condition in which not only is there an absence of acid, pepsin, and rennin, but also of the intrinsic factor of Castle.
