Abstract
In this article, a discussion is opened on the economic modelization of discrete choice situations. As an alternative to the standard model in discrete choice theory, which is based on a randomized utility function, the authors introduce here a new model, namely the stochastic commodity model, by shifting the random component from preferences towards consumption: in the latter model, although preferences are deterministic, they operate on a probability distribution which is optimized ex-ante and with respect to which consumption is randomly drawn in fine. Conditions under which the random utility model and the stochastic commodity model can be made equivalent are explicited. Finally, they examine how the stochastic commodity model is connected to the theory of decision under uncertainty, to time series analysis, as well as to various stochastic models in other scientific fields.
