Analyse
Abstract
A few chemical reaction, performed in continuously fed stirred tank reactors, evolve in a non-monotonous way. According to dynamical system theory, one should expect the appearance of the so-called deterministic chaos — that is a temporal behaviour which looks disordered, but is not — among the different phenomena that may exist. Experiments carried out on the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction have established the relevance of such a point of view, even in the field of chemistry. The concept of strange attractor has been clearly illustrated, and some of the salient features of the classical « routes » leading to chaos (i.e. subharmonic cascade, quasi-periodicity, intermittency) have been identified.
