The role of health education in medical management of asthma some program applications

Conclusions

Various asthma health education programs have been developed for different settings and populations. Many have been evaluated by an experimental research design. Objective followup evaluation has demonstrated signficant effects of these programs on participating families with enhanced asthma management practices, better social adjustment, improved school adjustment, and decreased need for unscheduled health care. The critical element of these successful programs has been a close association of health education with medical management. These programs have served to complement medical care, not replace it. These programs have been designed to bridge the gap between patient and physician so that an effective partnership can be formed to facilitate excellence in medical care and enhance family management skills. The family and patient can then display confidence in their ability to manage asthma care more effectively. Improved asthma management by the child and family can achieve better control of asthma and lessen the disruptive effects of asthma on the daily lives of these children. Integration of health education and medical treatment can produce a medically appropriate plan of health care for asthma that is acceptable to the child and the family. This balancing of education and medical treatment will also serve as a model for the delivery of health care for other chronic diseases of childhood.
