Abstract
Abstract
In Switzerland, as in most other countries, there is a higher rate of consumption of sleeping pills and tranquilizers among women. This paper focuses on the significance of the state of employment in relation to this consumption. When the state of employment is taken into consideration, it can be shown that the gender specific differences in the consumption of sleep ing pills and tranquilizers disappear. Being employed has primarily a consumption reducing effect among men. In Switzerland, women, and particularly women with children, make up a much lower proportion of the labor market. Not having a job leads to an increase in the consumption of sleeping pills and tranquilizers, whereby this problem becomes acute from the age of 45 onwards. From this point on, the protective factor “family” begins to have less effect as the children gradually move out of the house. Therefore, having a job takes on a decisive significance for middle-aged women in reference to the consumption of medicaments.
