Summary
In the future the deep-sea ecosystem will be influenced by increasing human activities. During the last years several scenarios about the reaction of the benthos to large-scale mining impacts were published but the long-term German research programmes DISCOL (1988–1993) and ATESEPP (1995–1998), for the first time, presented data on the reactions of meio-, macro-, and megafauna to physical disturbances of the deep-sea floor which are expected to occur during future commercial mining on mineral resources. The complete results will be published in Deep-sea Research II.
