Summary
Fifty-two soil samples from various parts of Bulgaria were used for the isolation of 295 fungus cultures. Their antibiotic activity against 4 bacterial species (Bacillus subtilis, Sarcina lutea, Escherichia coli andProteus vulgaris) and against 5 fungal species (Saccharomyces vini, Candida albicans, Candida pseudotropicalis, Aspergillus fumigatus andAlternaria tenuis) was tested. Up to 79% isolated fungi exhibited antibiotic properties, 27% being antibacterial, 15% antifungal and 58% universal antagonists.
The relationship between the activity spectrum of antagonists and ecological conditions was examined. It was found that with increasing altitude the relative incidence of antagonists with a narrower activity spectrum increased and of that of universal antagonists decreased.
Antagonists effective against Gram-positive bacteria were subjected to the penicillinase test to separate producers of penicillin. It was found that 4% produced penicillin only, 23% produced penicillin in combination with other antibiotics and 73% produced antibiotics different from penicillin.
Antifungal and universal antagonists were subjected to an orientation test for polyene antibiotics; 36% yielded a positive result.
