Occupational reactions in the seafood industry

Abstract

Occupational asthma is a common medical condition in subjects exposed to seafood- and fish-derived sensitizers. Sensitization can occur through inhalation of aerosols, or particles containing the offending sensitizer. Rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma symptoms are the main clinical features. An IgE-mediated mechanism can generally be demonstrated and atopy can be a predisposing factor. It is important to confirm the diagnosis through objective means and remove the affected workers from the workplace quickly. This type of occupational asthma can be used as a satisfactory model for human asthma from a pathophysiological and epidemiological point of view.
