Abstract
We obtain two sets of infinite conservation laws for both the electromagnetic and the asymptotic gravitational field. The conservation laws hold for fields generated by insular sources embedded into an asymptotically flat-space-time background. For the electromagnetic field, the general structure of the conservation laws relates the time variation of any multipole amplitude of the radial electric field to the outgoing flux of a corresponding multipole amplitude of the transverse magnetic field andvice versa. Forl=0 we obtain conservation of the flux of the magnetic induction and of the electric charge. The conservation laws for the gravitational field hold in the asymptotic region only and have a similar structure. A connexion to symmetry transformations is given for the e.m. conservation laws only. One set of them corresponds to local gauge invariance. A similar result for the second set of conservation laws requires the formal introduction of an axial e.m. potential, possibly coupled to a magnetic-monopole current.
