In view of the considerably improved efficiency of programs resulting from translations of programs written in ALGOL, FORTRAN and COBOL, programming by such languages will be of growing importance in future, not only for actuarial computations and research work, but also for insurance data processing.
The paper contains two programs written in the COBOL programming language, the first concerning the basic values of a mortality table, the second the list of sums insured and premiums of a group insurance. Both programs use the COBOL-version as provided for an IBM 7074 installation. Explanations are given for the input and output as well as for the procedures. For the second program an equivalent FORTRAN-program is also given in order to illustrate the different features of COBOL and FORTRAN.
