Statistical spread in pulse size of the proportional counter spectrometer

Summary

The pulse size distribution from monoenergetic radiations in a proportional counter was analyzed in the energy range between 2 and 70 keV. It is shown that the experimental data on total relative variances fit strictly to the relation:\(\sigma _P /\bar P = 0.138/E.^{0.395} \) The obtained spreads are smaller than would be according to Poisson’s distribution. An attempt is made to deduce the relative variance in the number of initial electrons produced when the total energy of the primary particle is available for useful ionization.

Si studia la distribuzione in altezza degli impulsi di un contatore proporzionale per radiazioni monoenergetiche nell’intervallo di energia compreso tra 2 e 70 keV. Si dimostra che gli scarti quadratici medi percentuali variano con l’energia secondo la relazione\(\sigma _P /\bar P = 0.138/E^{0.395} \). Tali scarti sono inferiori a quelli calcolabili in base alla formula di Poisson. Si esamina infine la fluttuazione della ionizzazione primaria prodotta da una particella assorbita nel gas del contatore.
