The effect of edaphic and genetic factors on the phosphorus components in potato tubers

Abstract

Clonal lines of five potato cultivars were grown in four locations differing in soil types. The effects of locations and cultivars on the phosphorus fractions of the tubers were determined. Large differences were found in total and inorganic phosphorus. Within the organic phosphorus fraction, greatest variability was found in phytic acid and in starch associated phosphorus.

With respect to components of variation, the locality appeared to be the dominant factor in determining levels of total, inorganic and phytic acid phosphorus. The cultivar contribution to these fractions was also significant. Starch-associated phosphorus appeared to be affected by locality and cultivar to about the same degree. However, nucleic acid phosphorus and lipid phosphorus were not affected by either locality or cultivar.

Resumen

Líneas clonales de 5 cultivares de papa fueron cultivados en cuatro localidades diferenciadas en cuanto a tipo de suelo. Los efectos de localidades y cultivares en las fracciones de fósforo de los tubérculos, fueron determinados. Grandes diferencias fueron encontradas en fósforo inorgánico y fósforo total

Dentro de la fracción de fósforo orgánico, mayor variabilidad fue encontrada en ácido fítico y en almidón asociado al fósforo.

Respecto a los componentes de variación, la localidad parece ser el factor dominante en determinar niveles de fósforo total, inorgánico y fósforo del ácido fítico. La contribución del cultivar a estas fracciones fue también significativo. El fósforo asociado al almidón, pareció ser afectado por la localidad y el cultivar en el mismo grado. Sin embargo, el ácido nucleico fosforado y el lipido fosforado, no fueron afectados por la localidad o por el cultivar.
