Summary

In this preliminary note we have summarized in tab. I and II the experimental results which we have obtained with a fast ionization chamber in coincidence with 28 G.M. counters (fig. 2 and 3). In the tablesS denotes the number of the ionization bursts per hour in the chamber andK the coincidences per hour between counters and chamber. It is shown that excluding a small contribution given by extensive air showers, eventsS are nuclear disintegrations in the chamber and eventsK are given by: (a) stars generated by an ionizing radiation and (b) stars produced by neutral radiation with one or more ionizing penetrating prongs. We cannot directly evaluate the ratioN/P between the rates of stars produced by neutral radiation (neutrons) and stars produced by a ionizing radiation (protons and π-mesons); however if we assume that the probability of production of prongs of given energy is the same for stars produced by neutrons or protons we findN/P=(1−(K/S)Pb)/((K/S)Pbx) where (K/S)Pb is the ratio between coincidences and ionization bursts with 5,7 g/cm2 of absorber between the chamber and the counters, andx is the ratio of the number of stars with one or more prongs of range greater than 5,7 g/cm2, to the total number of stars. We find thatN/P is of the order of 7÷15 for stars of total energy given by 6,5 MeV, and 2÷8 for 8,1 and 10,8 MeV. We have measured the absorption path of stars producing radiation in Paraffin and we found 206±40 g/cm2.
