Summary
A special-relativistic rigidity criterion for a body undergoing a nonuniform one-dimensional translation has recently been proposed by Evett, in the form of a differential equation. An integrated form of this criterion is given. Evett’s definition is compared with the classical concept of rigidity, with Born’s definition, with « radar » rigidity and with a stronger form of the latter in which the velocity of light in the accelerated frame of reference attached to the body is required to be independent of time. It turns out that there exists one particular type of motion for which Evett’s definition and the classical definition are simultaneously satisfied, and one type of motion for which both Evett’s and Born’s criteria are satisfied. Any law of motion that satisfies Evett’s requirement is compatible with both the weaker and the stronger form of« radar » rigidity.
