Characteristics of heavily ionizing particles and correlation effects in high-energy hadron-nucleus collisions in emulsion

The experimental data are presented on the multiplicity and angular distributions of heavily ionizing particles—products of target fragmentation in proton-nucleus and pion-nucleus interactions in emulsion in the range from 24 to 400 GeV/c. Azimuthal correlations between gray particles are observed in individual events of interactions. It is shown that groups of relativistic produced particles and recoil protons in hadron-nucleus collisions have a tendency to be emitted into the opposite directions in the azimuthal plane; the energy dependence of these correlations and the dependence on pseudorapidity of produced particles are investigated. The data presented are interpreted in the frameworks of current multiple-scattering models of nuclear production.

Si presentano i dati sperimentali sulla molteplicità e le distribuzioni angolari delle particelle fortemente ionizzanti—prodotti della frammentazione del bersaglio in interazioni protone-nucleo e pione-nucleo in emulsione nell'intervallo da 24 a 400 GeV/c. Si sono osservate correlazioni angolari tra particelle grigie in eventi singoli d'interazioni. Si mostra che gruppi di particelle relativistiche prodotte e protoni di rinculo in collisioni adrone-nucleo hanno una tendenza ad essere emessi in direzioni opposte nel piano azimutale; si studiano la dipendenza dell'energia di queste correlazioni e la dipendenza dalla pseudorapidità delle particelle prodotte. I dati presentati sono interpretati nell'ambito dei modelli correnti di scattering multiplo di produzione nucleare.
