We discuss the general properties of the Darboux matrix and of the corresponding Bäcklund transformation. We show that the « adding one soliton » Darboux matrix associated to any linear problem displays all the features of the matrices which one builds up when constructing the soliton solutions via the Zackharov and Shabat « dressing » method.
