Summary
Since the end of the eighties, two tendencies can be observed in the field of software development of life-insurance companies: —Besides increasing service to the customer, life-insurance companies attach more and more importance to the flexibility of their products. —In software development, object-oriented methods play a more and more important part. Hence results the question to the actuary: What is object-oriented software development and can it help to increase the flexibility of products? This question is the subject of the present paper. Object-oriented software development is based on the theory of abstract data dypes. Therefore the introduction gives some basic information about abstract data types. Subsequently this paper will explain the most important object-oriented terms and qualities, taking the programming language EIFFEL as an example, but without going into technical details. At the same time, it will develop the basic elements of an object-oriented model for a management system of a life-insurance company. In this context, this paper will concentrate on product management and its tariffspecific calculation functions, which is of interest for any actuary. Evaluating the model, the question of product flexibility is in the foreground.
