Summary
In this article, we describe an actuarial model for disability insurance that is based on the theory of continuous Markov processes. It generalizes the model currently used in Germany and is much more flexible. Without additional estimations, a great variety of product features can be modelled, for example arbitrary combinations of contract duration, waiting time, benefit payment periods etc. The model is based on four transition intensities which can be estimated without too much difficulty thus making the model useful in practice.
