A search for the decay μ→e+ν

Summary

A search for the decay μ→e+γ has been made using spark chambers and sodium iodide crystals. The spark chambers provided the means of measuring the angle between the electron and photon, while the sodium iodide crystals were used to measure the particle energies. A lithium target and thin (0.001 in.) aluminum foils in the spark chamber were used to minimize the scattering of the electron. An upper limit of 4.3·10−8 (90% confidence) has been found for the ratio of the rate of the μ→e+γ decay to the normal muon decay rate. A search for the decay μ→e+γ+γ has also been made.

Servendosi di camere a scintillazione e cristalli di ioduro di sodio si è ricercato il decadimento μ→e+γ. Le camere a scintillazione dànno modo di misurare l’angolo fra l’elettrone ed il fotone, mentre i cristalli di ioduro di sodio servono a misurare fra l’elettrone ed il fotone, mentre i cristalli di ioduro di sodio servono a misurare l’energia delle particelle. Nella camera a scintillazione si sono usati una targhetta di litio e sottili fogli di alluminio (0.001 in.) per rendere minimo lo scattering dell’elettrone. Si è trovato un limite superiore di 4.3·10−8 (attendibilità 90%) per il rapporto fra la quantità di decadimenti μ→e+γ e la quantità di decadimenti normali del muone. Si è anche ricercato il decadimento μ→e+γ+γ.
