Summary
It is shown that a system of three classical mass points in one dimension with attractive pair potentials of finite range is unstable in the following sense: there exists a range of energies above the autoionization threshold for the process {123}*→{12}+{3}+ kinetic energy for which one can find initial conditions that produce a metastable bound state {123}* of infinite lifetime. These initial conditions form a set of measure zero, however. Some generalizations, in particular that to a quantum system, are indicated.
