Neutron capture γ rays from deuterium

Summary

The spectrum of γ rays emitted in the reaction N+P → D + γ has been studied by means of a single crystal spectrometer and a pulsed neutron source. No γ lines, whose energy is less than deuteron binding energy (2.23 MeV), has been observed within the limits of sensitivity of the detecting device ; therefore the probable existence of a bound level of neutron-proton system, which was inferred by Nakagawa, is not confirmed.

Lo spettro dei raggi γ emessi nella reazione N + P→ D + γ è stato studiato con uno spettrometro a cristallo e una sorgente impulsata di neutroni. I risultati ottenuti indicano che, entro i limiti di sensibilità del metodo di misura, nessuna riga di raggi γ di energia inferiors all’energia di legame del deutone (2,23 MeV) viene emessa: questo risultato non conferma l’esistenza di uno stato legato del sistema protone-neutrone, dedotta da Nakagawa.
