Summary
Macroscopically visible compression failures in Norway spruce, bent by heavy storms beyond the boundary of elasticity, have been investigated with the scanning electron-microscope. Its highly variable magnifications allow the study of different types of compression failure, ranging from the complete annual rings to the single cell wall. Particularly interesting conclusions can be made as to the appearance of initial cell wall deformations, the different reaction of earlywood and latewood, and the influence of the rays.
