Summary
Calculations of the proton-proton reaction p+p→d+e++ve at energies comparable to or greater than the Coulomb barrier are presented. Astrophysical and experimental applications are discussed briefly; it is shown that the competing reaction e−+p→n+ve will be the dominant means of converting protons to neutrons at high energies (E≥0.5 MeV) in most astrophysical situations. The thick target yield for the proton-proton reaction is unobservable even in the best conceivable current laboratory situations, being less than one reaction per 200 000 years for a μA current beam of one MeV in the center of mass.
