Distribution of transverse momenta in high-energy meson production

Article

Summary

A « world survey » of experimental data on the transverse momentum distributions of 5738 secondaries from high-energy inelastic interactions is analysed. It is shown that the data cannot be fitted satisfactorily by the linear exponential distribution. The baryon data are well described by a Boltzmann distribution while the pion data are a superposition of two Boltzmann distributions with widely differing parameters. Although the combined effect of their mutual variation is to keep the over-all transverse momentum practically constant, the values of these parameters and the relative weight of the two partial distributions appear to be quite sensitive to various features of the process of meson production (nature and energy of the primary, nature of the secondary, production of strange particles, etc.).
