Summary
Using beech seedlings (Fagus sylvatica L.), ecophysiological effects of an artificial mist (pH 4.6, 3.6, 2.6) were investigated. A decrease in pH of the applied mist led to an increased leaching of both Ca2+ and Mg2+. As a consequence, more cations were taken up by the plants. The concomittant H+-efflux from the roots led to an acidification of the rhizosphere which was made visible with the help of a pH-indicator in an agar-medium.— The buffering capacity of the leaves decreased with the more acidic mist treatments, mainly in the extracellular space. Leaf contents of exchanged and leached cations decreased together with decreasing buffering capacities. —Transpiration of the seedlings was increased during the duration of the experiment.
