Summary

In 1975, five European firs were self- and cross-pollinated. For the latter, a mixture of equal amounts of pollen from five trees was used. These trees were growing at a distance of about 800 m from the parent trees.

Weight of the individual seeds from cross-pollinations, and also of a small amount of seed from uncontrolled pollination, was determined. The full seeds were sown in the nursery.

Immediately after germination, observation of seedlings began concerning survival, quality, growth, and attack by biotic and abiotic factors.

Number and size (length and diameter) of cones were not influenced by type of pollination. This applies also to total number of seeds per cone and weight of full seeds.

Number of full seeds per cone was the same with self- and cross-pollination; it amounted to less than one-third of the number obtained from uncontrolled pollination.

Relative self-fertility of trees was very high (0.72).

With self-pollination, germination percent was considerably lower than with cross-pollination; it amounted to 46.9 percent of the latter. This is very probably due to the effect of lethal recessive genes.

Mortality, height growth, resistance, and all other physiological processes of the plants were not influenced during the 6 years following inbreeding.
