Ein Beitrag zur Entdeckung der Postojna Kontrollmethode in Slowenien

Summary

A contribution to the development of a Postojna Continuous Inventory System in Slovenija.

Slovenian forestry is not agriculturally orientated, its starting point is the consideration of the forest as an ecosystem. This orientation stems from strong forestsilvicultural streams in Slovene forestry history.

In the 19th century a pro-natural silviculture was developed. On the turn of the 19th century the “school” of selection management was developed. Its creator was Hufnagel He developed a numerial selection system.

At this time (about 1900) in the forests of Snežnik and Postojna Schollmayer-Lichtenberg developed a new type of Continuous Inventory System. Utilising this inventaried. By 1938 the Continuous Inventory System area increased to 24 000 ha.

The particularities of the Continuous Inventory System are:

• - a 100-per cent cruise of all stands at 10 years intervals

• - a detailed sample analyse of modelltrees, at least 1 per cent of all trees in each diameter groups

• - the calculation of growth increments and yield in each of the diameter groups.

The Continuous Inventory System method is different from the Swiss Biolleys method. The author supplements the Continuous Inventory System method by gathering a 100- per cent cruise of all stands with additional stem analyses. In this way the author expected to increase the validity of the control.

The value of this method is recognized to-day, by studying the development dinamic of forests. The study indicated that the Continuous Inventory System control method has its real value when the forester accepts specific compartment control dates along with those for longer time durations and larger forest areas. Continuous Inventory System was developed by Schollmayer as a unique work in this period of European forestry history.

Based on the results of Schollmayer's work all of Slovenia's forests are inventoried utilizing Continuous Inventory System.
