Summary
Early and late flushing Scotch Pine seedlings from Bergen, Norway, show differences in fresh- and dry-weight and in number of cotyledons at the end of the first growing season. Moreover, early flushing individuals had significant higher growth rates from second to fifth year.
Compared with this, influence of seed size and effect of hypocotyl-length as a selection criterium are of minor importance. Early-flushing and late-ceasing pines, however, developed longer needles.
In one year old seedlings, selection for extreme cessation times seems to be little effective in connection with future growth rate.
