Summary
When studying unsteady-state processes relevant to electrons in a field in a gas, it is often assumed, incorrectly, that an initial delta distribution preserves its form during the relaxation process. In this paper the exact conditions for the preservation of the delta form are given. Moreover, it is shown that the temporal behaviour of any given moment of the true electron speed distributionP(v, t) may also be exactly described by replacingP(v, t) with an appropriate delta-function if the moment relaxes according to a simple exponential law. In the case of electrons in a gas in a field this happens for the second moment ofP(v, t) only if the electron collision frequency isv-independent. The true distributionP(v, t) maintains its (initial) delta form during the relaxation process if and only if the electrons move in a cold gas in the absence of fields of force. The equations commonly used in practice for the calculation of the «stationarization» time are discussed in the light of our results.
