Summary
The variations in the chemical composition and solubility in organic and inorganic liquids of spruce root wood with regard to degradation byFomes annosus have been investigated. The analyses showed a linear decrease of holocellulose with the weightloss of wood.
Among the cellulose fractions α-cellulose exhibits an overproportional degradation at the initial stage of fungal attack. Simultaneously there is an increase in the β-cellulose content. A measurable decrease in the content of γ-cellulose is to be seen only at a weightloss more than 4%. The degradation of lignin occurs intensively and this amounts in the initial stages of fungal attack to about 70% of the weightloss. From the solubility behaviour of the wood it can be assumed, that the initially present surphus of products of the α-cellulose degradation is consumed with increasing weightloss.
The total sum of degraded cellulose and lignin corresponds to the calculated weightloss of the wood.
