Summary
The pattern and cause of discolorations on stored logs of sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) were investigated. 65% of isolations made from unstained sapwood yielded no microorganisms, 20% bacteria, and 10–15% different fungi. Isolations from discolored areas almost regularly yielded bacteria and fungi, some belonging to the Fungi imperfecti, others to the Ascomycetes. The most frequently isolated species wereDiscella acerina, Cylindrocarpon candidum, Phialophora fastigiata, Phoma eupyrena, andCladosporium herbarum. On sawdust-agar of sycamore these species, exceptDiscella acerina, showed a reddish brown discoloration combined with an increase of pH from 5.6 to 6.15, whileDiscella acerina caused a reduction to 4.8. Some chemical investigations on sapwood of sycamore and sawdust-suspensions indicated that leucoanthocyanidins are involved in the formation of brown to reddish brown discolorations.
