Interactions of 17 GeV/c negative pions

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento (1955-1965)

Summary

Interactions of 17 GeV/c negative pions with nucleons and nuclei have been observed in a large heavy-liquid bubble chamber. Interactions with nucleons have been analysed using a two-vertex model of strong interactions. A striking feature of the results is the appearance of 55 events which can be explained as diffraction dissociation of the incident pion interacting coherently with a carbon nucleus. In these events the nucleus remains relatively undisturbed and the incident pion emerges as three pions. Analysis of the three-pion system indicates presence of ρ-meson and a possible three-particle resonance.
