Positron annihilation in neutron-damaged anthracene

Summary

The positron lifetime and the angular correlation between annihilation γ-rays have been measured both in neutron-damaged and non-damaged anthracene single crystals. The experimental results suggest that positronium is formed in damaged anthracene similarly as in liquid anthracene, while it is not formed in the non-damaged material. The long lifetime in neutron-disordered anthracene is 7.6·10−10 s and the angular correlation between 0.511 MeV γ-rays is modified by irradiation.

Misure di vita media dei positroni e di correlazione angolare tra i γ di annichilazione sono state compiute con cristalli di antracene irraggiati con neutroni e con cristalli non irraggiati. I risultati sperimetali suggeriscono che la formazione di positronio è possibile in antracene irraggiato, come già osservato per l’antracene liquido, mentre non è possibile in materiale non irraggiato. La vita media lunga in antracene disordinato da neutroni è 7.6·10−10 s e la curva di correlazione angolare tra i γ da 0.511 MeV è modificata dall’irraggiamento.
