Article

Summary

The absorption at rest of negative pions by6Li is investigated. A simple alpha-deuteron model for6Li is assumed and a polediagram approximation is used to calculate the capture rates. The agreement with recent experimental data is satisfactory.

We have assumed in (5) and (6) that the pions are captured mainly ins-orbits. This hypothesis is supported by recent experimental data (8) which gives a 15 percent of 2p-capture for mesic atoms. Furthermore we have used the hydrogenic form for the wave function of pions. As recently pointed out by several authors (9), distortion effects for the mesic-atom wave function would only reduce the absolute value of the capture rates by 50 percent, so that the calculation of the branching ratios of the reactions (1) and (2) would not be appreciably modified by our simplifying approximation.Google Scholar
