Summary
Measurements are reported of intensities and annihilation rates of free positrons and positronium in aqueous solutions of alkali halides and ammonium nitrate. It was found that these salts are effective in quenching positronium formation; this quenching depends only on the negative ion and not on the positive one. The decay rate of positronium increases slowly with the salt concentration; a discussion is given. No evidence was found of the formation of positron compounds and in particular of e+NO −3 whose formation was suggested by previous authors.
