Alternative description of the nonlinear interaction of a plasma with a weak electron beam

Summary

As an application of the general theory described in a previous paper (1), the evolution of a weakly unstable, infinite plasma, with immobile ions, and without external fields, is studied for the so-called bump-in-tail case. It is shown that, in the quasi-linear approximation, the equations of motion of the electron distribution function and the spectrum of plasma waves are equivalent to the usual adiabatic formulation. The present approach yields the equation of motion for the plasma waves in the form of a diffusion equation in wave-number space.

Si applicano i risultati della teoria generale descritta in un precedente articolo allo studio dell’evoluzione di un plasma infinito debolmente instabile, con ioni immobili e senza campi esterni, nel caso di una distribuzione maxwelliana con una piccola protuberanza sulla coda. Viene mostrato che, nei limiti dell’approssimazione quasi lineare, le equazioni di moto della funzione di distribuzione elettronica e dello spettro delle oscillazioni di plasma sono equivalenti a quelle della nota formulazione adiabatica. Nella presente descrizione, l’equazione di moto delle oscillazioni ha la forma di una equazione di diffusione nello spazio dei numeri d’onda.

Реэультаты обшей теории, описанной в предыдушей статье, применяются к иэучению зврлюции слабо неустойчивой бесконечной плаэмы, с неподвижными ионами и беэ внещних полей, в случае распределения Максвелла с неболь-щыим протуберанцем на хвосте. Было покаэано, что в пределе кваэилинейного приближения уравнения движения злектронной функции распределения и спектра осцилляции плаэмы являются зквивалентными уравнениям иэвестного адиабатического подхода. В настояшем случае уравнение движения осцилляций имеет форму уравнения диффуэии в пространстве волновых чисел.
