Development of a recycled polymer coating for steel corrosion protection: An adhesion study

Abstract

The potential of recycled Poly(ethylene terephtalate) (PET) as a surface coating for steel corrosion protection, using a vinyl resin coating (PVC) as a control was studied. This investigation led us to develop a method to measure the adhesion strength of plastic coatings on steel under specific environmental conditions (temperature and UV exposure). All the results obtained showed that recycled PET presented very good adhesion on steel and that temperature and UV exposure induced only insignificant loss of adhesion. The results also showed that UV exposure induced a slight degradation of the PET.
