Abstract
A series of beech wood samples were hydrothermically treated for 1 to 48 hours at temperatures of 80, 100 and 120 C, respectively. The alterations of treated wood lignins were investigated. The analytical data point to the negligible changes in quantity of lignin determined. The amount of lignin extractable by dioxane is increasing with time and temperature. The dioxane lignin preparations were analysed for contents of basic functional groups and sacharides. Methods of IR spectroscopy, TA and GPC were applied. The products of nitrobenzene oxidation of lignins were also analysed. As follows from the analytical data, lignin of beech wood is relatively resistant under the conditions of beech wood hydrothermal treatment at 100 C, and only smaller amounts of gualacyl structures are sphtting off during the early stages of treatment preferentially. Prolonged time of treatment under these conditions causes an increase in velocity of syringyl structures dissolution. Hydrothermal treatment maintained at temperatures above 100°C leads to predominant condensation reactions of lignin.
