Abstract

Samples from 10 years oldLeucaena leucocephala grown in plantation in Morogoro (Tanzania) were studied to determine suitable Kraft pupling conditions and pulp properties for paper production. For comparison,Eucalyptus wood already being used by Southern Paper mills in Tanzania was also analysed. Analysis followed ISO and Scandinavian standards. The results showed thatL. leucocephala had an average basic density of 540 kg/m3 and an average fibre length of 1.125 mm with low decigrex number. Compared toEucalyptus, L. leucocephala needed tougher cooking conditions. Kraft pulping ofL. leucocephala with 20% effective alkali content and 2000 H-factor afforded a yield of 49.5% at a kappa number of 28.L. leucocephala wood likeEucalyptus needed low refining energy to improve some of its properties. Papersheets made fromL. leucocephala pulp had low tearing strength, average tensile strength, high opacity and TEA-strength with good formation. IncorporatingL. leucocephala pulp with other pulp types in paper making is recommended.
