Abstract
By means of selective reduction and controlled hydrolysis combined with cation exchange, it is possible to itemize the carboxyls of hardwood and softwood in three categories, as free, restricted, and bound. The picture firts the recognition, supported by earlier experimental evidence of a cache of exchange sites which are involved according to the testing procedure. Although in chemical terms acidity is very weak, it still drives the processes because of localized delivery.
