Summary

Decomposed granite soils are widely distributed in the south-western part of Japan. One of their characteristics is the easy crushing of soil grains, which is an important factor in the study of their engineering properties. In this paper, the authors observe the weathering properties of soil grains using an electron microscope, and explain the difference between the weathering patterns of quartz and feldspar. In addition, they examine experimentally the grain fracture which is dependant on weathering patterns, and present a concept of selective fracture of soil grains.
