Summary

A number of properties of basal clays is shown to be retained by the weathering products that have developed on them in the Stavropol region. Tertiary eluvial and Quaternary deposits formed in the arid zone have thus inherited from the basal Maikop clays a high degree of dispersion, the composition of exchangeable cations and the mineral composition of the clay fraction.

Alongside certain inherited properties new features appear in the composition and state of the weathered material which are characteristic of soil formation in the arid conditions of lithogenesis. Weathered soils are more saline, contain larger quantities of secondary minerals (gypsum, jarosite, iron oxides), their fine fraction is aggregated, they have higher water retaining capacity and porosity, all of which result in forming the characteristic engineering geological properties of saline clays differing from those of the basal Maikop.
