Summary

The usefulness of rapid testing of index characteristics, as well as the dependence of engineering-geological properties of individual rock types on the petrogenetic development of the rocks has been verified in connection with the systematic passportization and preparation of the Engineering-Geological Atlas of Rocks in Czechoslovak Carpathians. The advantages of determining index characteristics of dynamic hardness (Schmidt’s hammer) and the ultrasonic velocity are documented by examples with granodiorites and andesites. The division of both these rock types into sub-types corresponding to various petrogenetic stages permits the definition of more representative strength and deformation characteristics.
