Summary

Without an actual model all the stability calculations are mere hypotheses. This model can only be obtained through a serious study of the whole area, a classification of the movement, and on this basis a reasonable hypothesis may be deduced. This must be checked by boring, geophysical sounding, etc., in order to recognize the real distribution of the materials, and to evaluate their strength characteristics by testing. The boreholes and geophysical sounding must be used jointly, because all these methods have their possibilities and limitations. The geophysical logs are at present one of the most promising methods.
