Summary

The territory of the German Democratic Republic can be divided into a flatland and a highland region. The construction of highways and railways in the mountainous region requires a great number of rock cuttings to be excavated. In the course of some 100 years the stability of their slopes has become considerably reduced. In the G.D.R. the movements on rock cuttings have been studied and several types of them were differentiated. The investigation, estimation of stability of the cut slopes and their control are carried out using the “method of empiric estimation” and the “method of simplified calculation”. Both methods, which are based on particular engineering-geological and geometric parameters, are briefly explained in the text.
