Summary
The content of urea- and melamine resin in wood particle boards may be determined by a chemical analysis of the total nitrogen and multiplication with a conversion factor. Besides the Kjedahl method, already used for this purpose, two further methods are explained as follows:
-
1.
Decomposition with a mixture of perhydrol and sulphuric acid and subsequent titration according to the formaldehyde method. For the determination of small quantities the colorimetric method adding Neßler's reagent is suggested.
-
2.
Distillation with a 30% sodium hydroxide solution and subsequent titration of distilled ammonia and methylamine in case of urea resin adhesives.
While the Kjedahl process takes about 5 hrs., the method with sodium hydroxide (only applicable for the determination of urea resins) can be performed in about 2 hrs., and the method with perhydrol and sulphuric acid with subsequent titration according to the formadehyde method in about 20 minutes. Therefore the last mentioned method should be of great advantages for the control of the adhesive content of wood particle boards.
