Summary

Information concerning the number and structure of the rays in compression wood is meagre and often contradictory. Following an investigation of the chemical composition of ray cells in normal and compression woods, the structure of the rays in the two tissues were compared in the present, preliminary study. Rays and ray cells were the same in normal and compression woods ofAbies balsamea, Larix laricina, Picea rubens, Pseudotsuga menzeisii, andTsuga canadensis, but were considerably more numerous and larger inPinus resinosa. The ultrastructure of ray parenchyma and ray tracheids inLarix laricina andTaxodium distichum were identical in normal and compression woods. The secondary wall was distinctly lamellar, and a terminal lamella was often present. Most of the lignin was located in the secondary wall, where it was uniformly distributed. It is suggested that the larger number and size of the rays occasionally observed in compression wood is a result of the rapid growth characteristic of this wood.
