Summary
Practical and theoretical aspects of the use of liquified gas solvents for the pressure treatment of timber are reviewed. In particular the use of liquified butane solutions give advantages in terms of deep penetration into impermeable softwoods such as Spruce and an absence of residual solvent in the treated wood. These advantages must, however, be considered in relation to the relatively high capital cost of the treatment plant required to operate with liquified butane solutions.
