Summary
The swelling of oak, beech pine and teak wood at 20° C and different relative humidities was studied. Roughly half, of the total swelling occurs in the range from 0 to 86% and the other half from 86 to 100% rel. humidity. The swelling anisotropy depends on the moisture content of wood. Oven-dry wood swells isotropically at the beginning. With rising moisture contents the increase in the swelling anisotropy is greater in sapwood than in heartwood.
